Library Community Updates

  • Seymour Public Library- Lisa Carr shared information about "one card, one system" (library cards from any library in the Finger Lakes Library System can be used at any library in the system), their new tools and games lending collections, their civic literacy series, and their upcoming Summer Reading Program.
  • South Central Regional Library Council- Julia Corrice shared information about their History Unbound resources to support the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework, their on-demand learning resources, and that teachers can get CTLE through SCRLC workshops. She spoke about the New York Heritage Digital Collections and the SCRLC's traveling exhibits (Erie Canal Bicentennial Exhibition, Women's Suffrage Centennial Exhibition). She also informed everyone that the SCRLC is dropping Omni Full Text because there is a lot of overlap with General OneFile.
  • Cayuga Community College Library- Judy Campanella was unable to join us but she did send information for the school librarians about how they can access resources from the CCC library. She also indicated that she is available to work with them and their students.

BOCES Makerspace Facility

  • Makerspace resources were starting to be delivered and set up. It is expected that the makerspace lab will soon be available to teachers.

Professional Development

  • Recent Activities
    • NYLA/SSL Conference, Inquire, Inspire, Involve, Innovate was on May 3 - 5 in Long Island. Two school librarians attended and both returned with numerous ideas for their schools.
  • PD Survey- SLS surveyed the school librarians to identify when they would like our first meeting of the year.
    • 15 responded between May 7 through May 14
    • 1st meeting preferences were identified as: 1 late aug, 5 mid/late Sept., 9 sometime Oct
    • The survey also asked if school librarians would like more in depth training on Discovery Education. 14 people responded yes, 1 person responded no.
  • Tentative professional development calendar for 2018-2019
    • NYLA/SSL Carole A. Kearney Educational Leadership Institute
    • Greater CNY SLS Fall Conference, Kids Deserve Us!
    • A Fall workshop with John Schu 

Library Catalogs

  • No issues or concerns were reported of the OPALS and Follett library catalogs
  • School librarians asked if these vendors could be brought in for training on new features. SLS will follow up with these vendors.

SCOOLS Union Catalog

  • SCOOLS, Media Flex, and MitiNet will be working together to clean up and rebuild the SCOOLS Union Catalog over the summer.

Interlibrary Loan

  • Last day to borrow materials through SCOOLS is May 25, 2018 and all materials will be due back on June 15, 2018.
  • Please contact SLS if you have any questions or concerns about resources lent or borrowed through ILL.

Library Media Resources Orders for 2018-2019

  • The orders from all school districts  were received and these were being reviewed for accuracy. SLS will contact the school librarian or the school district about any questions relating to these orders.
  • School librarians reported that the new Library Resources Management System made this process much easier than it had been in the past.

Recognizing Retirees

  • SLS and the school librarians recognized Loretta Johnson (Jordan-Elbridge High School) and Debra Covell (Skaneateles High School) on their contributions to their schools and to this region, and we congratulated them on their retirements.
