1:30 - 3:00 SLS Council meeting
Updates from the local library community- Representatives from other local library systems shared information about their library programs and discussed how they could support our library programs and our schools. We appreciate their participation at our meetings.
Review SLS Plan of Service- We reviewed and discussed our plan of service to ensure that it properly reflects our SLS.

SLS- Looking back, looking forward - The SLS Coordinator discussed two (2) titles he read over the summer ("Good to Great", and "Good to Great and the Social Sectors", both by Jim Collins). He discussed the Stockdale Paradox and the Hedgehog Concept. He reflected upon challenges faced the 2016-2017 school year and he expressed confidence about this year as we build stronger school library system.
About the roles of Communication Coordinators and School Library System Council persons- We reviewed the roles of Communication Coordinators and School Library System Council persons, who currently held these positions, and the need for our member libraries to participate in our meetings and discussions so that we can discuss issues of concern and make meaningful, data-driven decisions. The SLS coordinator appreciates everyone's leadership to bring information to our meetings and to take information back to their school districts.
Review professional development calendar for this school year- The SLS coordinator discussed professional development opportunities that were planned for school librarians in this region. Specific information will be shared when it becomes available. The dates for these events will be posted onto Google Calendars and listed on the SLS LibGuide. A calendar of library and literacy-related events is also available for school librarians that might be seeking programming ideas for their schools.
New products and services available to school libraries- The SLS coordinator discussed new resources that are now available to our school libraries. These are in addition to other resources that were available in the past.
The SLS Coordinator shared the new Library Resources Management system and gave the school librarians their account information so they could log into it. This system provides school librarians with contact information, information about their purchases of library media resources for the current year, and access information for these purchased resources. This system will also be used for next year's purchases. More training will be provided as part of future SLS Council meetings.

Other resources available through SLS
About COSERS- The SLS coordinator discussed the scope of the Library Media Resources and Library Automation resources. The SLS coordinator also discussed that funds cannot be transferred between COSERS and that these funds can only be spent on resources authorized by the school districts. The SLS coordinator also discussed that several school libraries migrated their catalogs over to Follett Desiny over the summer.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)- The SLS coordinator discussed the value of ILL to make additional library resources available to the students and teachers to meet their needs. It is also important for us to loan our resources to other school libraries. The SCOOLS Catalog is available for school librarians to request and borrow materials within our region. Contact the SLS coordinator for items not found in SCOOLS. We will check to see if it might be available thourgh BARC.
The School Library System coordinates all ILL borrowing and lending outside of the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES. Please send all returns to us and we will return these to the lending libary systems, please do not send them directly to the lending library. Please do not contact libraries outside of our school library system for resources in their collections. While they may be willing to lend materials to you, we need to use proper School Library System ILL procedures. We already have systems in place for trans-library system borrowing and it is one of the services of this library system.

"Tell us: What's happening in your school library" Research study from the University of Albany- Dr. Joette Stefl-Mabry from the University at Albany and Dr. Michael Radlick of Learning Technology Visions sent out a survey for school librarians earlier this year. As a token of appreciation, the researchers sent gift cards to school librarians that participated in this survey.
