Experiences With Makerspace in Our Schools

Missy ;Beyel and Aja Hahn, A. A. Gates Elementary School, Port Byron Central School District.

Anne Mlod, Genesee Elementary School, Auburn Enlarged City School District.

Loretta Johnson,  Jordan-Elbridge High School

Makerspaces are emerging in libraries and they are embraced by schools as a way to integrate STEAM into their curriculum. Earlier in October, we invited educators in CNY to "Makerspaces, Inquiry, and STEM Learning: A Day of Exploration" to explore how teachers could use robotics and coding in their classrooms.

Since this event, the BOCES has been loaning out these devices to teachers in our component schools so that they could work with their students. Missy and Aja will share their makerspace experiences with us, and Anne will talk about teaching coding with her students. Loretta will share how she is working with her students to implement makerspaces in her library.

We will also have makerspace devices available to explore and to discuss how we can use the idea of makerspaces to engage students and promote teacher collaboration in our schools.
